ZQALTUBO

Tskaltubo was one of the most popular health resorts in Soviet times. Stalin not only had his own Dacha here but also his very own bathroom, SPA No. 6. While his mother was a frequent guest here, Joseph Stalin only came here once. After the collapse of the USSR and the independence of Georgia, the large streams of visitors stopped and the magnificent buildings began to deteriorate.

After the great civil war, some of the displaced people from Abkhazia settled in the old sanatoriums.
You can find my report on Abkhazia here. You can read about my personal experiences during my visit to Tskaltubo in detail in my blog.

Photographic motivation:

In addition to my historical interest in the old Soviet past and the intense history of Tskaltubo, the versatile architecture of the buildings played a major role for me. The mostly very wide-angled recordings are intended to reflect the context of size, decay, and nature.
